Bomb explodes outside house of Thai king's adviser
Thu Mar 9, 2006 11:56 AM GMT

By Pracha Hariraksapitak

BANGKOK (Reuters) - A small bomb exploded outside the residence of the chief adviser to Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Thursday, slightly wounding a Briton, police said, linking the blast to a deepening political crisis

They said the bomb, hidden under a stone bench near an unoccupied security booth in front of the residence of former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda, sent glass flying and damaged three cars parked in front of the house.

Police said the blast, which they linked to political instability caused by a campaign to oust Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, wounded a 28-year-old Briton walking past the house in an old part of town popular with tourists.

"It was primarily meant as a threat or to cause havoc to keep the political turmoil going," Police Colonel Gamol Santiglanhul told a Bangkok radio station. "Coincidentally, the security guards just happened to be inside the house with Papa Prem."

The Canadian embassy said an earlier report of one of its nationals being wounded was a mistake by a hospital. The man entered the hospital at the same time as the Briton.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra denounced the as yet unexplained attack.

"We can't yield to bandits," Thaksin said during a sweep of Chantaburi province east of Bangkok ahead of an April 2 snap election he called to counter the campaign to oust him.

Interior Minister Kongsak Wantana told reporters witnesses had seen a man in his 20s planting the bomb, which appeared to be similar to devices that went off near the Justice Ministry in January and at the Interior Ministry the previous month.

ANTI-THAKSIN CAMPAIGN

Since the anti-Thaksin campaign started in September, there have been several small bomb blasts in Bangkok, but most of the others went off during the night and nobody was hurt.

A small bomb exploded at a Buddhist meditation centre associated with a key Thaksin critic last month.

Prem, who was inside the house when the bomb exploded, served as prime minister for eight years in the 1980s and is still a pillar of politics who mediates rifts among politicians and soldiers.

The 85-year-old retired general, who chairs the 18-member privy council that advises Thailand's revered king, was not perturbed by the incident, a cabinet minister said.

"He just wondered why a bomb was put in front of his house," Defence Minister Thammarak Isarangura told reporters.

Anti-Thaksin protesters have vowed to step up their campaign next week, raising fears of violence and army intervention in a country with a long history of military coups.

Army Commander-in-Chief Sonthi Boonyaratglin insisted that his men would keep out of politics.

"Soldiers must listen, they must have discipline. Any action we take now will do us more harm than good," he told reporters.

Bus crashes in Turkey; 30 people feared

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANKARA, Turkey -- A passenger bus carrying some 40 people drove off a road and plunged into a river on Thursday, killing at least 14 passengers and injuring 11 others. Some 16 other passengers were missing and feared dead, a local official said.

The bus was submerged in the waters of the Kelkit River after the pre-dawn crash in the central Turkish province of Tokat, 200 miles east of Ankara, local official Ferhat Kutoglu said.

One passenger managed to free himself and walked to a nearby village for help, the Anatolia news agency reported. Ten other passengers climbed on top of the roof of the bus to wait for help, and rescuers pulled them to safety with ropes.

Rescue teams and divers later recovered the bodies of 14 of the passengers, most of them from inside the bus, but about 16 other passengers were missing.

Kutoglu said the missing had probably been swept away by the Kelkit's strong currents and had likely drowned.

Two of the bodies were discovered near a bridge some 12 miles away from the scene of the crash, the agency reported. Kutoglu said rescuers were searching the river banks for bodies.

Authorities shut down the floodgates of a nearby dam to lower water levels at the river, helping recovery efforts, Anatolia reported.

The dead included at least two women and a child, Anatolia said.

The bus was traveling from Istanbul to the eastern city of Van, near the Iranian border.

Kurdish Rebels Suspected in Turkey Blast

By SUZAN FRASER Associated Press Writer
© 2006 The Associated Press

ANKARA, Turkey ¡X A bomb set off by a suspected Kurdish suicide bomber Thursday killed two people and injured 19 in Turkey's Kurdish-dominated southeast, local officials said.

Police Chief Tacettin Kurt said a police officer, a civilian and an unidentified man were killed, and seven of the injured were in serious condition.

Mustafa Yavuz, the deputy governor of Van, where the attack took place, said the body of the unidentified man was torn apart, leading police to suspect he was a suicide bomber.

"It is 99 percent likely to be a suicide attack," Yavuz said.

CNN-Turk television, quoting police, said security forces in Van had received intelligence reports a month ago that three suicide bombers were planning attacks in the city.

Yavuz would not confirm that report, saying only that "security forces received several intelligence reports, all of which were assessed carefully."

The Anatolia news agency said police had been searching for three suspected bomb plotters, a Turkish woman and two Syrians. Investigators were trying to determine whether Thursday's bomber was one of the Syrians, Anatolia said.

The blast was centered on a municipal traffic van at a busy street close to the local governor's office. The van was crumpled and burned by the explosion, its windows blown out and side door panels blown off, television images showed.

The explosion also shattered the windows of several other vehicles and nearby houses and businesses, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Guerrillas of the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, have recently escalated their attacks in the region. Kurdish militants believed linked to the outlawed group have staged several bombings across Turkey during the past month.

The group is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union.

On Monday, suspected rebels killed four police officers in an ambush near the southeastern city of Batman and detonated a bomb under the car of a military officer in the town of Idil in Sirnak province, killing one person.

Fighting between guerrillas and security forces has killed more than 37,000 people in Turkey since 1984.

Also Thursday, a court charged the deputy mayor of the town of Cizre for his alleged involvement in an ambush on a military vehicle earlier this month, which killed one soldier, the local governor's office said. It was not clear how Abdulkadir Inedi was alleged to have been involved.
