The driver, Karon Lawerence, and another passenger, Jenna Neri, are hospitalized. The four teens were on their way to Wallkill High School, where the devastating news quickly spread. The smash-up took place at roughly 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 30 and was set off when Brandy's 2007 Land Rover collided with another vehicle, resulting in a deadly four-car pile-up. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Leland Tang, the former Moesha star, whose full name is Brandy Norwood, was driving in the slow lane of the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles at a speed of 65 mph. The cars in front of her, however, had slowed considerably. [b][color=blue]Whether the 28-year-old failed to notice the reduction in speed or whether her Land Rover suffered a malfunction is still being investigated by authorities. Whatever the case may have been, the star crashed into the vehicle in front of her, a 2005 Toyota Corolla, being driven by 38-year-old Los Angeles woman Awatif Aboudihaj. That crash set off the resulting smashes: Aboudihaj subsequently hit a 1989 Toyota Tercel driven by 82-year-old Donald Lite, a collision that caused Aboudihaj's car to slide sideways, careen into the freeway's center divider and bounce back to a stop in a different lane. It was at that time, and in that lane, that a fourth car, driven by 50-year-old Mallory Ham, broadsided Aboudihaj's vehicle.[/b][/color] While Ham suffered moderate injuries, Aboudihaj was found in critical condition and quickly taken to the Holy Cross Hospital in nearby Mission Hills, where, per Tang, she was treated for multiple pelvic fractures. She passed away the following evening, with her cause of death listed as major blunt force trauma. Brandy, who was neither arrested following the incident nor found in possession of drugs or alcohol, today acknowledged the fatal accident and issued a statement through her publicist, Courtney Barnes. "She wishes to publicly express her condolences to the family of the deceased," Barnes said. "Brandy asks that you respect the privacy of everyone involved at this time." The California Highway Patrol is currently investigating the incident, first reported by TMZ, and is in the process of performing an evaluation on the singer's vehicle to determine whether any mechanical defects caused or contributed to the accident. Tang said that upon completion of the tests, the CHP would reevaluate their initial investigation to determine whether there was any negligence on Brandy's part.

State police said they have no idea what caused Patrick Farrell, 36, who was headed to work in Farmingdale, to lose control of his 2000 Chrysler Cirrus. Police said road conditions were normal, that Farrell's car had no contact with other cars on the westbound side of the road, and that they are looking at excessive speed as a possible factor. The accident occurred at 7:09 a.m. and caused the eastbound Southern State to be closed at Exit 36, Straight Path, until almost 10 a.m. Farrell was pronounced dead at the scene. He apparently was not wearing a seat belt, police said. The driver of the van, a 2003 GMC Savannah, was "very lucky" to escape with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a state police spokesman. Christopher Bagnasco, 40, of Plainview, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip with a hip injury, state police said. "It is amazing that he hit only one car," State Police spokesman Frank Bandiero said of the car being driven by Farrell, which crossed between openings in trees located on the center median before striking the van almost head-on. 鄺子憲指屯門公路來回路段中,多處路旁或路中護欄設計都有缺點,當局應盡快改善弊端,例如,新汀九橋頭兩段護欄接駁位,由於沒有覆蓋式鐵欄,若車輛直撼向兩段之間,折斷的鐵枝易插入車廂;他建議當局應在兩護欄之間加上覆蓋式設計,保護接駁位置。 而往新界方向近大欖避車處路段,則有一段斜台式路肩,斜台前方有大型路牌及坐地式「快相機」,若車輛駛上斜台易飛起撼向鐵柱。鄺表示當局應將斜台前方的大型路牌及「快相機」搬走,就算車輛剷上斜台,亦不會撼向硬物。 另外小欖交匯處前的分岔路口放置多個巨型路牌及石墩等,除指示混亂外,路牌前沒有遮掩物或減速的風琴式鐵欄設計,車輛失控剷上石壆後便會直撞路牌。

本身為交通工程師的道路安全研究小組主席鄺子憲表示,根據運輸署過往多年統計,涉及與物件碰撞的車禍呈上升趨勢(見圖),大部分發生在路旁的事故可導致物件插入車廂、車輛摺曲或翻滾,造成嚴重傷亡。鄺表示,由於香港道路多依山而建,多斜坡和彎位,但道路設計者加建護欄時常忽略現場環境變化或參考過往車禍的經驗。 該會早前發現,香港公路防護欄終端普遍有3種危險: ■石壆終端:車輛撞及時不能反彈卸力,直撼入石屎; ■斜台設計:令車輛容易跳起成炮彈飛車; ■鐵欄末端外露:鐵枝容易插入車廂造成傷亡。 其中前晚屯門公路車禍中,車輛撞向的石壆便屬於石屎護欄終端設計。鄺子憲說,該會約在4年前就有關研究編成報告,向環境運輸及工務局反映,報告中早指出前晚案發位置的石屎護欄終端有潛在危險,並附上照片,有關報告至今仍放在該會網頁。鄺說,遞交研究報告後並未獲得任何回應。本報昨日向運輸署查詢護欄終端設計有潛在危險的問題,該署指暫未能回應。 鄺子憲又表示,單是屯門公路已存在10多段危險護欄設計,希望當局亡羊補牢。鄺又稱,要改善護欄安全有多種方法,包括拆除和遷移危險的障礙物;採取危險性較少的護欄終端設計;適當使用護欄以遮擋障礙物;使用漸變設計連接不同護欄,以及應用能量消減結構柱和護墊等。 [b]倡設評審監督道路設計[/b] 鄺又表示,歐美等地已將道路安全視為公共衛生課題,由世衛組織規劃。很多國家都設有獨立道路安全顧問機制,但香港在這方面經驗較少,討論亦較薄弱。本地道路設計因此缺乏監督,亦欠權威指引,部分設計未臻完善。該會建議,當局應設立一個獨立的「道路安全評審」委員會,有系統地檢查新建道路及檢討交通管理安全問題,確保所有道路計劃安全地運作。 2003年7月屯門公路發生21死巴士墮橋意外後,當局曾邀請獨立工程師為屯門公路等全港公路「把脈」,找出潛在危機,但報告中未有觸及防護欄終端問題。另外,運輸署近年已引入風琴式防撞欄,並在高危路段加裝。 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ [b][color=blue]肇事豐田 撞擊評級屬「可接受」[/b][/color]
在司機位的安全帶性能及左腳傷勢評估兩個環節,該車更僅僅合格(marginal)。學會指在撞擊中,Corolla(98至02年型號)的安全帶不能控制模擬人體的擺動,司機頭部先向前衝,然後反彈撞向旁邊窗框;而司機左腳亦受力較多,受傷風險較其他身體部位高。 在其他測試環節包括汽車結構、保護頭頸、胸口、右腳,該車的表現則為良好或可以接受。

"They had a great relationship. She used to be a party girl - then she met him," said Perez's cousin Janie Lora, 31. "David was her first real, real boyfriend," said Eliza Figueroa, Perez's friend. "She was so in love with him, so in love. They were planning a future together. I can't even explain how this feels. I heard this morning and I cried my eyes out." The couple and their friend were returning from a party in Washington Heights in Manhattan and heading back to Perez's home in Woodhaven when the accident occurred, family members said. 金山宣傳兒童乘車安全知識 【舊金山訊】舊金山衛生局目前正展開一項全市性的活動,目的是減少低收入家庭和少數族裔社區兒童乘客的傷亡率,同時提高社區人士對兒童安全規則的認識。 推動這項活動的是舊金山總醫院外傷中心。[b][color=blue]據統計,2004年一年,因車禍受重傷的兒童都是少數族裔,主要是拉丁裔、非裔和亞裔。舊金山警察局在2004年發出4721張兒童未繫安全帶或未使用兒童安全椅的罰票,2005年發出5760張。同時,2004年有145名新生嬰兒至13歲兒童因車禍受傷、一人死亡;2005年則有133名兒童因此類車禍受傷。 [/b][/color] 「兒童乘客安全計畫」第一次進行了社區調查,發現危害本市不同年齡兒童乘客的主因有:孩子坐在車子前座,以及不用兒童安全椅而只用安全帶。為了進一步保護兒童免受不必要的傷害,該項計畫今年針對上述兩點展開行動,包括:宣傳海報、電視廣播、講座、示範裝置、檢查和配發兒童安全椅。 「即使在最佳情況下,要確保孩子盡可能安全地乘坐車輛並非容易、省錢之舉。」舊金山總醫院婦女健康中心的健康助理余圓圓說,「在改善兒童乘客安全一事上,我們希望能協助各位解決難題、增進大家對最佳作法的認識、提供示範和檢查,並且配發兒童安全椅給沒有購買能力者。」 [b][color=blue][size=4]2006年在舊金山四個社區發現下列危害兒童乘客的情形: [/b][/color][/size] 一、在華埠,啟明啟蒙學校的觀察員注意到家長常把六歲和更年幼的孩子置於加高座位(boosterseats)後再繫安全帶,而沒讓他們穩繫在兒童安全椅內。六歲以上需用加高座位的孩子則常只繫上安全帶,違反兒童安全規則。 二、在米慎街夾16街印地安裔衛生局附近,負責宣傳的員工發現有六歲或更年幼的兒童坐在車輛前座而完全不用安全帶或兒童安全椅。六歲以上的兒童亦坐前座。 三、在外米慎區,舊金山總醫院職員注意到,六歲以下孩子只繫安全帶而無兒童安全椅。六歲以上兒童常坐在前座只繫安全帶。 四、東南衛生局員工發現一歲以下幼兒不當地坐在面向前的兒童安全椅內,六歲以上的孩子坐前座只繫上安全帶。 舊金山總醫院婦女健康中心和另外三個機構:中美洲資源中心、米慎區健康中心和訪谷社區中心,都獲得撥款,於2007年推展兒童乘客安全守則的宣傳工作。這些機構將每月為家長、家庭和社區舉辦兒童乘客安全講座、為無能力購買兒童安全椅的家庭提供此安全椅。此外,更參與各社區活動派發各種語言的資訊刊物,並繼續觀察大眾實施兒童乘客安全的狀況。

His car, which also was carrying his 49-year-old wife and 12-year-old son, careened toward a house at 73-02 181st St., coming to rest after it grazed the home. Luey was pulled from the car after emergency service unit crews removed its door. He was pronounced dead at New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens. A neighbor said Luey worked for the Port Authority. A PA spokesman wasn't able to confirm his employment last night. No one else was seriously injured. The 88-year-old driver of the gray 2003 Lincoln sedan, Harold Gross, who said Luey rolled through a nearby stop sign, was also taken to the hospital for observation, cops said. There was no obvious damage to the house, whose owners were not inside at the time of the accident. The lawn, sidewalk and street were littered with glass, metal and plastic. "We're lucky that we missed it, but I feel bad for the people in this accident," said homeowner Deepak Gupta, 48, who moved to the house with his wife and two teenagers four months ago. Police were still working to determine the cause of the crash. Gross, distraught at learning Luey had died, said he had the right of way. "I was going west on 73rd Ave.," Gross said from his home in Flushing. "He just drove right through the intersection." "Oh, my God," he said, his voice cracking with emotion when told of Luey's death. "I don't know what to say."

Officer Paul Cheever said, however, that he could not release the details of how Chang was linked to the accident because the investigation is ongoing.[/b][/color] Don Bradley, Liu's psychology professor at Northwestern Polytechnic, said he learned of the tragedy while watching the news on television. "I was just shocked," he said. Liu was in three of Bradley's elective psychology classes over the last year. He said a number of classes at the small, 500-student private school held moments of silence Monday. Many of the students are from Asia, like Liu, Bradley said. "It's a great loss for our community," he said. "School faculty, staff and students are all very close because it is such a small school." Bradley said Liu was known to school staff and students as "Jack." He is discussing the notion with school President George Hsieh, of starting a scholarship in Liu's name. He added that he would like to keep Liu's name in the news in order to get the person responsible to come forward. "It would be healing for this person to come out in the open and admit their actions," Bradley said. "It would also be healing for Jack's family and friends." Christina Rose Verde was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the car following the collision. Physical evidence found by police show she was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash. Fraser Fort George RCMP were called to the crash near Widdis Road at 9:30 a.m. When they arrived, they discovered a southbound 2006 Chevrolet PT Cruiser and a northbound 2007 Kenworth tractor trailer unit had collided. The PT Cruiser had rotated away from the impact and stopped in the southbound ditch on its wheels. The tractor-trailer spun 180 degrees following the collision and rolled off the highway onto its roof in the southbound ditch. The driver of the PT Cruiser, Dawn Marie Agno, 34, of Fort St. James suffered minor injuries and was taken to Prince George Regional Hospital where she was kept overnight for observation. The truck driver, Ronald J. Bell, 54, of Scarborough, Ont. wasn’t injured in the crash. The tanker trailer was intact and no sodium hydroxide was leaked. However, police contained and evacuated the scene until it was determined safe for emergency personnel to approach. Weather conditions at the time of the crash were overcast with light snow. Police found the road conditions in the area of the crash where very icy. Police closed the highway until 3:30 p.m. while investigators gathered evidence at the scene. Traffic then resumed in one alternating lane until Wednesday morning. HAZMAT teams from Environment Canada and Quantum Industries worked through the night to drain the sodium hydroxide from the tanker. Once the tank was empty, a tow truck was used to extract the vehicles from the ditch. The cause of the collision is still under investigation. RCMP have begun examining both vehicles for any sign of mechanical malfunctions and are speaking to witnesses and the drivers. In New Jersey, police reported two fatal accidents yesterday -- including one with multiple deaths in Gloucester County -- but locally only a handful of serious injuries resulted from crashes. Most of the local accidents were minor, police said, and typically involved vehicles sliding off roadways or into other vehicles with no injuries. [b][color=blue]Among the more notable accidents in the area Friday were a collision between a sport utility vehicle and a tractor-trailer on Interstate 295 in Lawrence, an accident in which a car slammed into an ambulance transporting a patient in Trenton, and a crash on Route 1 in South Brunswick involving a police car responding to a bank robbery.[/b][/color] Friday's treacherous travel conditions prompted authorities to impose a 35 mph restriction on the entire length of the New Jersey Turnpike for much of the day. The Mercer County Special Services School District opted to send students home early Friday afternoon. While a flood watch remained in effect for the Mercer County area and was not expected to expire until Saturday morning, the National Weather Service and the Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center on Friday again revised their prediction for the Delaware River, saying the river should crest in Trenton at 14.4 feet Saturday, well below flood stage. But the weather service also revised its snow prediction -- increasing the amount forecast -- by issuing a winter storm warning for Mercer County and saying 3 to 5 inches of ice and snow could fall by early Saturday morning. Karen Chiang died of inhalation injuries after the sports car she was riding in crashed into a steel barrier and caught fire early Wednesday on the underground street in the city's downtown, authorities said. The other two victims have been identified as Northern Illinois University students Tommy Young Choi, 20, of Palatine, and Cindy Young Kim, 20, of Northbrook. The victims were all home on spring break. Choi also died of inhalation injuries, while Kim died of injuries suffered in the crash, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office. Friends said Chiang was a student at Purdue University. A university spokeswoman said Thursday that the school has a student named Karen Chiang who is a 19-year-old sophomore in psychology from Northbrook. Chiang and Kim attended Glenbrook North High School together, friends said. Then several became dozens as a steady stream of friends walked to the site of the crash to place flowers, cry in each other's arms, pray or struggle in silence with the sudden loss. A spokesman for the New Westminster police department said the pursuit began at about 4:10 a.m., when a city police officer spotted a suspicious vehicle near Sixth Avenue and McBride Boulevard. It was a silver-coloured Pontiac Pursuit. Staff Sgt. Casey Dehaas said the officer, whose name was not released, ran the vehicle's licence plate on the police computer. Within five or 10 seconds, the officer knew the vehicle had been stolen in Surrey. Dehaas said the officer turned on the police cruiser's red lights and siren. The four-door sedan accelerated away from him. The car headed north on Second Street but failed to stop at the stop sign before 10th Avenue, a traffic artery that is busy day and night. The truck, meanwhile, was travelling eastbound on 10th Avenue, just as the driver of the stolen car sped past the stop sign. Dehaas released no estimate of the maximum speeds of either the police cruiser or the stolen car, saying those estimates would be established later by investigators. But he said the pursuit lasted just 60 to 90 seconds. Neighbour Maria Andrade, who lives a block away from the crash site, was watching television when she first heard police sirens, followed by a horrendous crash. "I could tell, by the vibration, that it was some kind of accident," she said. "It sounded like a bang against a big house -- some kind of pounding explosion." The severely damaged car was carried about 10 metres east, in the direction the heavier truck was travelling. It landed on the sidewalk, facing the road. The truck stopped a few metres further away from the intersection, on the opposite side of 10th. The truck lodged itself against a street light standard that leaned precariously toward the road. The passenger side of the truck was heavily damaged, but Dehaas said the driver suffered only minor injuries. Dehaas said one of the men in the stolen car died immediately and the other died on the way to hospital. Police are withholding the names of the 29-year-old driver and his 42-year-old passenger until their families are notified. The driver had a criminal record for charges that include theft over $5,000, possession of stolen property, and driving while disqualified. The passenger also had a lengthy criminal record for property and driving offences. Tenth Avenue remained closed until almost 1:30 p.m., forcing thousands of drivers to find alternative routes. Dehaas said the accident is being investigated by the police department's major crimes section. He said the officer was following the guidelines for emergency pursuits. He noted it was 4 a.m. and there were no pedestrians or vehicles on the road at the point the officer decided to pursue the stolen car. Dehaas said the officer was doing his duty when he made a split-second decision to pursue the vehicle. "They created their own demise," he said of the people in the stolen car. 【本報紐約訊】皇后區法拉盛28日驚傳轎車撞公車的車禍意外,造成18人輕重傷。一輛由韓裔駕駛的轎車疑似闖紅燈與公車相撞,兩車猛烈撞擊,一起衝到路旁的高爾夫球場,碰到柵欄後才停下來。公車上14名乘客與司機皆受輕傷,而韓裔車內一名乘客重傷,目前仍在醫院緊急治療。韓裔駕駛與另一名乘客傷勢較輕。 警方表示,25歲報住在法拉盛羅斯福大道和149街交口附近的周大衛(David Cho,音譯)被測出車禍發生時,體內酒精含量遠超過正常標準。 根據警方記錄,這起車禍發生在28日清晨5時45分,周大衛當時駕駛一輛1995年日產Maxima轎車,沿著布許紀念大道(Booth Memorial Ave)向東行駛,與當時正沿著164街向北行駛的Q65公車在十字路口相撞。 據了解,當時公車為閃躲闖紅燈的轎車緊急轉向,但仍與小轎車雙雙撞上路邊燈桿,最後衝向一旁凱辛納公園高爾夫球場的柵欄。兩車的玻璃全部碎裂,日產轎車前座的雙氣囊全開,而駕駛座旁的位置則因撞擊,全部擠成一團。 公車上包括司機等共15人受到不同程度的輕傷,其中兩名乘客現場醫治後先行離去,其餘13人被送往紐約醫院皇后醫療中心。小轎車上的乘客傷勢則較為嚴重,其中29歲坐在前座的男子情況危急。據目擊者指出,當時周大衛的車上有兩名乘客,車禍發生後該目擊者曾上前協助,也曾試圖拍打周大衛的面頰。他說,後座乘客似乎昏迷不醒,而前座的男子則跌臥在周大衛身上,「每個人都在流血。」 已於昨日稍晚出院的一名女乘客驚魂未甫,懷有五周身孕、拄著拐杖的她說,車禍發生時她感覺有三次撞擊,一次是小轎車撞上公車、一次是車子撞向路邊燈桿,最後一次是撞上柵欄,「我當時以為我就快要死了。」附近鄰居表示,當時聽到好大一聲撞擊聲音,探頭看才知道發生車禍;另一名鄰居則抱怨當地車禍頻繁,相關單位應設法處理。該名住在路口附近的居民說,她住處的圍籬就曾被肇事車子撞壞過好幾次,光是去年就有兩起;另一人則建議應在路口裝左轉燈,降低車禍發生的可能性。 警方測出周大衛當時嚴重酒醉,將以涉嫌酒醉駕駛和違反交通規則罪嫌將其送辦。

兩司機通過酒精測試 堅稱無越線 意外中4名傷者分別為三菱Evolution男司機黃╳春(25歲)、男乘客李╳生(24歲)、兩名女乘客高╳婷(24歲)及鍾╳雯(25歲),各人送院治理後均無大礙。黃某與富士跑車司機鍾╳龍(30歲)事後均通過警方酒精呼氣測試,兩人同堅稱並沒有越線行車。現場消息稱,肇事兩名司機認識,當時還有其他友人駕車同行,各人正在附近「玩飄移」。 事發昨日零時40分,黃駕駛灰色三菱「露筍」載同3名友人,沿新娘潭路向大埔方向飛馳,至鍾離峰對開一個左彎時,與逆線駛至、由鍾某駕駛的黃色富士WRX相撞,由於車速頗高,撞力猛烈,一聲巨響後,兩車嚴重損牷A其中三菱右前輪飛脫,而富士的右後輪亦飛脫。 由於現場為非法賽車熱點,每逢周末深夜,不少飛車黨均以新娘潭路為賽道,現場路段過往發生過涉及非法賽車的交通意外,警方正調查今次車禍是否與C車有關。

He was 73. A family spokesman said he died in Menlo Park, south of San Francisco, in a crash while being driven to an interview with Y.A. Tittle, a retired New York Giants quarterback, for a forthcoming book. Persistent, inquisitive and prolific, Halberstam subjected the institutions, myths and legends of American society to intense scrutiny, publishing almost two dozen nonfiction books that gave his readers a vivid behind-the-scenes portrayal of the history of their times. Placed under his reportorial microscope were the nation's great media empires, its policymaking apparatus, its automobile industry, its sports stars and their teams, and the New York firefighters who showed their heroism on Sept. 11, 2001. Attention first came his way after the New York Times sent him to cover the fighting in Southeast Asia in the early 1960s, when opposition to the Vietnam War was relatively low key. Often describing himself as one who began as a supporter of his nation's involvement in the war, Halberstam grew skeptical of official accounts. He placed a premium on seeing for himself and went, he said, "to the boondocks, to isolated posts, to strategic hamlets." With a handful of other American reporters, he became known for sending back dispatches that often varied sharply from the government's optimistic versions. His accounts troubled many readers and proved a severe irritant to the White House. His work ultimately prompted a suggestion that he be recalled. He was not, and he shared the Pulitzer Prize for International Reporting in 1964. Later, Halberstam wrote a best-selling book about the war and how it was conceived and directed. "The Best and the Brightest," which appeared in 1972, is often regarded as a landmark in turning many against the war. In the book, with its overriding mood of folly and tragedy, Halberstam offered vivid descriptions of personality and incident in the account of how good intentions went astray. "Every nonfiction book should be written to answer a question," he once told an interviewer. Calling President Lyndon B. Johnson's advisers, who had originally counseled President John F. Kennedy, "ostensibly the ablest group ever to serve in American government," he said that Vietnam "was the greatest American tragedy since the Civil War." "How," he asked, "could this happen?" "Meeting by meeting, memo by memo, power-play by power-play," Halberstam traced what was described years later in The Washington Post's Book World as "the making of the Vietnam quagmire." An icon of U.S. journalism, Halberstam wrote before and after Vietnam about the major movements and figures of his times. As a young reporter, he covered upheaval in Africa and the early days of the civil rights movement in the South. He returned to that era in one of his many books, called "The Children." He later attributed his willingness to confront the establishment and to ask uncomfortable questions to inspiration he drew from the African American schoolchildren and civil rights demonstrators who faced an angry establishment in the early 1960s. "It made me braver," he once said. The demonstrations, he later told a public radio interviewer, came to be "my first big story." Of those days, he said, "I couldn't wait to go to work," although "it was often fairly dangerous" and became even more dangerous. "I had an intuitive sense that I was watching history . . . something noble." David Halberstam was born April 10, 1934, in New York City. His father was a surgeon and his mother, a teacher. He was reared on military posts while his father was in the Army, in Connecticut and in Yonkers, N.Y., just north of New York City. He attended Harvard University, where he became managing editor of the student newspaper, the Crimson. His first newspaper job after graduation in 1955 was at the Daily Times Leader in West Point, Miss. Recognizing the growing civil rights movement as the major story of that period, he said he believed that Mississippi would be a good place to learn reporting. After a year in West Point, he joined the Tennessean in Nashville, and in 1960 he went to the Washington bureau of the New York Times. Soon he was sent to the Congo, where he covered the secession of the Katanga province and was wounded by shrapnel. In a later book, he recalled those times as "exciting and dangerous." Vietnam followed, in September 1962, and his coverage brought both denunciations and praise. In an incident embedded in journalism annals, New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger visited the White House in October 1963, where he heard from Kennedy about Halberstam's work. The president, as the story is told, indicated to the publisher that Halberstam was possibly too deeply involved in the story and asked whether a transfer was being contemplated. Sulzberger said the Times felt that Halberstam was doing all right. Back in New York in 1964, Halberstam covered the city for the Times. His first Vietnam book, "The Making of a Quagmire," appeared in 1965. By then he was assigned to Poland. Later came Paris. In 1967, he left the Times to spread his journalistic wings. A torrent of books ensued. "The Reckoning" dealt with the competition between Japanese and American carmakers. "The Powers That Be" studied the media, including The Washington Post. "The Breaks of the Game" was on professional basketball, and a pennant race between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees was chronicled in "The Summer of '49." Critics lauded those and others as rich in anecdote and personal glimpses, but also as accounts of significant social change. There were many prizes and a sheaf of honorary degrees. Halberstam kept working, telling interviewers of his lifelong love for journalism and its ability to offer practitioners an education while paying them to get it. A brother was killed in 1980 in Washington by a would-be burglar at his home. A 1965 marriage ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife, Jean, and a daughter, Julia, both of New York.

溫市交通部主管霍布斯(Andy Hobbs、下圖)昨日表示,今年至昨日發生10宗奪命交通意外,當中6名死者是行人,3名死者是乘客,1名死者為過路人。單單在7月初至昨日,已發生4宗致命車禍,其中2人是電單車司機或乘客,1人是私家車乘客,1人是途人,「可謂死得人多」。若情況繼續下去,7月下旬還可能會發生更多車禍。 警方已大力執法打擊危險駕駛司機,或推行途人安全運動,而警方近期在格蘭圍公路(Grandview Hwy.)或東南海旁大道(South East Marine Dr.),向違例司機發出1.4萬張罰款告票,其中16人被控相關危險駕駛,另有49輛商業貨車被檢查。 但他說,無論警方如何努力,仍然會發生意外,這視乎司機和行人所作出的選擇。他稱,冬季天氣變壞導致發生意外,而夏季天氣好,道路視線清楚,亦一樣會發生意外,原因是這樣好天氣,司機亦會駕得快一些。 至於冬季天氣壞和夏季天氣好所發生的意外數字,警方則未有這個統計。霍布斯提醒司機要依照交通規駕駛外,也認為乘客有責任提醒司機切勿超速,途人也應該小心,在街角橫過馬路時,要留意司機是否違例駕駛或危險駕駛,以保護個人生命安全。
