Roslyn suspect taught elsewhere

A Roslyn High School substitute teacher charged in the Dec. 2 off-campus rape of a 15-year-old female student has taught at other schools in Nassau County, school officials said Wednesday.
Timoteo Rodriguez, 29, who taught sex education and other subjects at Roslyn before his arrest Tuesday, had worked as a full-time social studies teacher at Westbury High School and a day-to-day substitute teacher at West Hempstead High School, the officials said.
Det. Lt. John Allen, the commander of Nassau's Special Services Squad, said authorities are investigating whether Rodriguez acted inappropriately with other students.
"I am always concerned that a person who has abused their position to have sex with somebody has done this before, but I have no indication of that," Allen said.
Rodriguez, who lives in Great Neck, has no previous arrests, Allen said. He is married, but his wife and child live in Hawaii.
Rodriguez had sex with the Roslyn student while they were alone at his friend's Knightsbridge Road apartment in Great Neck, police said. The girl, to whom Rodriguez sent nude pictures of himself, later told someone at school, and police were notified.
Rodriguez was charged Tuesday with third-degree rape, disseminating indecent material to a minor and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the charges at his arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead. He is being held on $50,000 cash or bond.
Third-degree rape is a Class E felony, punishable upon conviction by up to 4 years in prison. The charge applies to someone 21 or older having sex with someone 16 or younger.
After the arraignment, Rodriguez's attorney, Dennis Lavalle of Garden City, said, "I'm not making any comments."
School officials first learned of the incident on Dec. 6. They contacted the authorities and suspended Rodriguez without pay, officials said.
Rodriguez had been a day-to-day substitute at the 1,128-student school since September, said Barry Edelson, a school spokesman. He declined to discuss what Rodriguez taught, but said the subjects varied.
A group of students off the campus Wednesday called Rodriguez a nice and charming teacher. A 10th-grader said Rodriguez taught her health and sex education class. In recent classes, he spoke about rape, she said. "He said rape was gross," recalled the 15-year-old, whose name was withheld because of her age.
Other students said Rodriguez taught Spanish and math.
Rodriguez worked as a full-time social studies teacher at Westbury High from 2003-05, a school spokesman said.
He was a day-to-day substitute at West Hempstead High from 2002-03, school superintendent Carol Eisenberg said.
It was unclear why Rodriguez lives separately from his wife, whom police said is in the armed forces and stationed in Hawaii.
